The reason I ask is this - I have the dvd version of ME1, but it absolutely will not install on my system (I have vista, and from what I can gather vista and me1 don't mix). However, I've been playing the ME2 demo and .. me likey. With it being $14.99 on steam right now, I'm tempted to jump on it but will I be lost story-wise without playing the first game?
Read a wikipedia/Mass Effect wiki summary of the first game. Then jump in and enjoy.
you won't be able to transfer a save file.
Though you can still follow the story pretty easilly, you miss out on a lot if you don't play the first. There are literally dozens of instances where people reference what you did in the first game, and just as many instance where characters basically say "Hey Shepard! Remember me, from the first game?". Plus you wont feel anything when you reunite with characters from the first game if you've never played it.
My advice is buy ME2 now since its cheaper, but holdoff on playing it until you beat ME1. I'm sure you can figure out a way to get it working, have you tried running it in XP compatibility mode?
I'm having a really hard time believing that there isn't a workaround for whatever problem you have installing the game.
I think some of the major events have to be experienced, not read about. But I guess you can youtube some of the major stuff after you read it.
I'd say play it, even though the gameplay ain't super.
Right off the bat, a totally fresh ME2 playthrough just assumes you let the Council die. One of the biggest choices from the first game is totally out of your hands. Similarly, you don't get a say regarding the Rachni queen and god knows what else. Basically, you get to say who died and that's about it. It's well worth just buying the digital edition from Steam if your DVD copy is borked. ME2 is simply incomplete without a save from ME1.
Mass Effect, the entire main story can be run through (without rushing,) in a little over ten hours, and the choices you make as well as character customization/backstory will be with you forever. The choices you make here will have dramatic effects on Mass Effect 3. There's really no reason to NOT play through Mass Effect.
You will be missing out on a TON in ME2 if you don't play ME1. All emotional value.
Well if you already have I dont see why not , besides technical issiues. Have in mind that the gameplay of the first wasnt as refined as in the second , and the mako may or may not require of your infinite patience , but I would say yes you need to play it ( also the "exchange" you have with Sovereign is one of my favorite gaming moments in gaming history )
Just reading up ... did someone just drop major spoilers? i'm currently playing through ME1 and as the thread title contained no spoiler warning would appreciate it staying that way.
The original Mass Effect was an incredible game. If you have the opportunity to play the original, then by all means do it. The second one will still be waiting for you when you finish the first.
Unless you really disagree with any of the predetermined choices that the game will force you into provided that you start with ME2, it's not a big deal. I didn't have problems with what the game laid out for me, I just read up on what happened in ME1.
Mass Effect is clunky, but its story and the world it begins to flesh out for you is absolutely worth playing through if you can.
I installed in on vista no problem. It's installed to the default C: drive.
You must play it because WREX MUST LIVE.
You should play ME1, not because you're going to miss a whole metric fuckton, but because it's a great game.
no i went straight to ME 2 with no knowledge of the series and I was blown away.

" You must play it because WREX MUST LIVE. "THIS!
Yes. I think a bit part of the ME2 experience (at least for me) was the fact it was a continuation of a game and story that I already loved.
I think the story would still make sense without knowledge of the first game but a lot of the events wouldn't make as much sense or seem nearly as cool.
I'd definitely recommend playing the first game before the second.
Yes.
You'll miss a lot without playing the 1st game by yourself. Watching or reading the story doesn't cut it imho.
There are loads of recurring characters in ME2 that you wouldn't even know without playing the first game.
Also, there are tons of important decisions that will affect the 2nd game's story greatly.
Play the first one ASAP!
Also, not cool. Some spoilers here.
Not cool.
I think the real question is: WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE VISTA STILL!?!?!
Windows 7 is totally worth it.
YES!
You need to play ME1, the story is amazing and you will miss SO MUCH if you don't play it.
" no i went straight to ME 2 with no knowledge of the series and I was blown away. "If you never played ME1 how do you know if you missed anything?
FYI you missed a ton of stuff.
You will no doubt be blown away by Mass Effect 2's amazing story, and you don't need to get ME1 to play and/or understand ME2, but to answer your question, yes your missing out. On a lot. I personally feel the second was as good as the first, or maybe its just my nostalgia. Either way, I suggest pooling up another 20 dollars to get it, or if you have a PS3, wait for them to release both games in like January.
Thanks all. Guess I'll pick up ME1 from steam.
One of my favourite things about Mass Effect 2 was that my decisions in Mass Effect 1 had an effect on the second game, but perhaps the charm of this was also helped out by the fact there had been a fair gap between the two games for me. However, even forgetting all the save transfer stuff I still think it's well worth going back and playing Mass Effect 1 before playing 2. It's not absolutely vital to do so but Mass Effect 1 was a really good game, just because it's successor improved on it so well doesn't mean that Mass Effect 1 wasn't a great experience within itself.
You should play Mass Effect 1 because it will make ME2 that much better.
My favorite moment of ME2 was the opening scene, where a major set piece from the first game is changed in a major way. Without playing ME1 this would have little to no significance. I hope you play it so that you can love that moment as much as I did!
Either way, I suggest pooling up another 20 dollars to get it, or if you have a PS3, wait for them to release both games in like January. "PS3 owners are not going to get ME1 because Microsoft holds console rights, so don't hold out for that.
If you can play it... FUCKING DO SO.
It's not as much that you get the control over the choices made into the sequel but it's more that you feel more invested in what you do in ME2 when you know that what you have done in ME1 gets reflected in people you meet in ME2.
There were so many times I went "Oh yes.. I did that.." When someone approached Shepard and thanked him for doing this or that in ME1...
Play it to control the big choices in ME2 but also play it to get more immersed in the series in its entirety.
(Also check out the last days of the daily sales on steam. I'm pretty sure you can get it for 7ish bucks (50% discount) if they decide to roll out the sales they've had from previous days)
Yes. You should play ME1 before ME2. For two reasons:
1. It's a fantastic game.
2. A significant chunk of ME2 will be meaningless without playing ME1 and a result, the impact of ME2 will be lessened.
Play the first one for sure. I actually liked it better than 2 for some reason.
You should play ME1 first. All the missions on the Citadel towards the beginning of the game are a good time, and playing ME2 will be even more enjoyable with the context. You could read a story summary and skip ME1, but the small details from ME1 that recaps don't cover are what I appreciated most about the game.
I did not miss a shitty frame-rate, awful pop-in, long elevator rides, identical side-quests and awful mako controls. I learned about most of the universe through the awesomely narrated codex, I knew what a reaper was within 5 minutes of playing ME2.
If the question is story wise yeah obviously you'll miss a lot. But in terms of "missing out" on a great game, no not really. ME1 was decent at best....but the file transfer is the thing, it's a hard question really.
If your having problems installing ME1 from the disc then why not try the Steam version? You can buy both ME1 and 2 for under $20(a steal if you ask me).
Ugggghhhhhhh. Fine. I guess I'll play ME too before I start the sequel. But believe me, I'm not happy about this.
Yes you will miss a lot.
Play ME1 first.
You'll be missing the better game.
" You'll be missing the better game. "The better story and dialogue, absolutely. The better gameplay? Not by a fucking mile.
It's not obligatory to play ME1, but it helps you get invested into the universe. Both play quite differently from each other though. ME1 is more user-unfriendly to get into (yet at the end game winds up being far easier). So you don't have to play ME1 to know how to play, or what the various "Biotics" (magic) does, because the game is very good at explaining all the backstory through Codex stuff.
So yeah, you don't have to play ME1. I would advise you to, since it's still a good game, even if the Mako sections were boring.
Oh and if you don't play ME1, or have some sort of hack, you can't set the story to how you like it - for example, starting a fresh new game from ME2, without importing a save, will mean that Wrex is always dead and the original Council is also always dead. It doesn't massively affect ME2, but might affect ME3.
I'd say you'd be missing out on a lot by not playing ME1, yes.
Yes. Play the first game before 2. A huge part of Mass Effect 2's value is going to be lost on you without first importing your save.
